Again, when your Windows 10 machine is not activated, Microsoft is preventing you to customize the login screen through the applet or settings interface. This post will mainly explain how to perform the login screen customization on standalone machines we are not using any GPOs in this post!!!
When your Windows 10 is not yet activated, you will notice that the windows application that allows you to customize your system has some limitations.
At this stage, we had to find another way to customize the login screen. This method consist of replacing the default image used by the login screen by the image to be used in the login screen. This method is still working but requires to manipulate file permissions and find the correct file name. There is a better way to customize the login screen which will be explained in point 2. However, to provide a complete set of options, we are still listing this method. To customize the login screen, you will simply need to replace the image currently in used by the one you want to use.
You will need to take ownership of the folder in order to be able to browse and access the picture file to be replaced. We can use the Windows Explorer interface or you can use the following command line. You can check that the change has been applied successfully by login off and check your new custom login screen. This option is working but there is a better way to customize the login screen….

Based on your description, you are able to change the system log-on background screen on Windows 7 through the registry key.

Do you truly think it is unreasonable to expect this to be replaceable or at least have it be less gaudy? You might find it cool if you’re a teenager, but everyone else wants something a little more neutral, less glaring. Another question related to that, why is it that I still see the default photo at first on the lock screen while I put a specific background myself? Have you tried the link in my previous post? I personally haven’t and I don’t particularly enjoy manually creating registry keys, but I probably will unless this feature is released in an update for most of the previous reasons mentioned.
In this day and age of ultimate personalization, you blow off logon customization as a privilege solely for manufacturer? To use your example Just as any automobile manufacturer, auto dealer, etc. I cannot imagine being prevented «Just Because». And yes, when it comes to operating systems I have contributed my fair share.
As for the right to brand a product, how could Windows 10 be mistaken for anything other than Windows 10? Isn’t the ultimate branding when your product is demonstrably unique in the world?
