The technology enables files to be transparently encrypted to protect confidential data from attackers with physical access to the computer. EFS is available in all versions of Windows except the home versions see Supported operating product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free below from Windows onwards.
Cryptographic file system implementations for other operating systems are available, but the Microsoft EFS is not compatible with any of them. When an operating system is running on a system without file encryption, access to files normally goes through OS-controlled user authentication and access control lists. However, if an attacker gains physical access to the computer, this barrier can be easily circumvented.
One way, for example, would be to remove the disk and put it in another computer with an OS installed that can read the filesystem; another, would be to simply reboot the computer from a boot CD containing an OS that is suitable for accessing the local filesystem.
The most widely accepted solution to this is to store the files encrypted on the physical media disks, USB pen drives, tapes, CDs and so on. In the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems EFS enables this measure, although on NTFS drives only, and does so using a combination of public key cryptography and symmetric key cryptography to make decrypting the files extremely difficult without the correct key. However, the cryptography keys for EFS are in practice protected by the user account password, and are therefore susceptible to most password attacks.
In other words, the encryption of a file is edltion as strong as the password to unlock the decryption key. It uses a symmetric encryption algorithm because it 203 less time to encrypt and decrypt large amounts of data than if an asymmetric key cipher is used. The symmetric encryption algorithm used will vary depending on the version and configuration of the operating system; see Algorithms used by Windows version below.
The EFS component driver then uses the symmetric key to decrypt the file. Folders whose contents are to be encrypted by the file system are marked with an encryption узнать больше. The EFS component driver treats eedition encryption attribute in a way that is analogous to the inheritance of file permissions in NTFS: if a folder is marked for encryption, then by default all files and subfolders that are created under the folder are also encrypted.
When encrypted files are moved within an NTFS volume, the files remain encrypted. However, there are a number of occasions in which the file could be decrypted without the user explicitly asking Windows to do so. Files and folders are decrypted before being copied to a winddows formatted with another file system, like FAT The most significant way of preventing the decryption-on-copy is using backup applications that are aware of the «Raw» APIs.
In other enterpriwe, the files are «copied» e. Two significant security vulnerabilities existed in Windows EFS, and have been variously targeted since. In Windowsthe local administrator is the default Data Recovery Agent, capable of decrypting all files encrypted with EFS by any local user.
EFS in Windows cannot function without a recovery agent, so there is always someone who can decrypt encrypted files of the users. Any non-domain-joined Windows computer will be susceptible to unauthorized EFS decryption by anyone who can take over the local Administrator account, which is trivial given many tools available freely on the Internet. Setting SYSKEY to mode 2 or 3 syskey typed in during bootup or stored on a floppy disk will mitigate the risk of unauthorized decryption through the local Administrator account.
In Windowsthe user’s RSA private key is not only stored in a truly encrypted form, but there is also a backup of the user’s RSA private key that is more weakly protected. If an attacker gains physical access to the Windows computer and resets a local user account’s password, [7] the attacker can windoas in as that user or recovery agent and gain access to the RSA private key which can decrypt all files.
This is because the backup produch the user’s RSA private key is encrypted with an LSA secret, which is accessible to any attacker who can elevate their login to LocalSystem again, trivial given numerous tools on the Internet. In Windows XP and beyond, the user’s RSA private key is backed up using an offline public key product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free matching private key is stored in one of two places: the password reset disk if Windows XP is not a member of a domain or in the Active Directory if Windows XP is a member of a domain.
This means that an attacker who can authenticate to Windows XP as LocalSystem still does not have access to a decryption key stored on prooduct PC’s hard drive. In WindowsXP or later, the user’s Enterprrise private key is encrypted using a hash of the user’s Product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free password hash plus the user name — use of a salted hash makes it wwindows difficult to reverse the process and recover the private key without knowing the user’s passphrase.
Also, again, setting Syskey to mode 2 or 3 Syskey typed in during bootup or stored on a floppy disk will mitigate this attack, since the local user’s password hash will be stored encrypted in the SAM file. Once a user is logged on successfully, access to his own EFS encrypted data requires no additional authentication, decryption happens transparently. Thus, any compromise of the user’s password automatically leads to access to that data. Windows can store versions of user account passphrases with reversible encryption, though this is no longer default behaviour; it can also be configured to store and will by default on the original version of Windows XP and lower Lan Manager hashes of the local user account passphrases, which can be attacked and broken easily.
Wimdows also stores local user account passphrases as NTLM hashes, which can be fairly easily attacked using » rainbow tables » if the passwords are weak Windows Vista and later versions don’t allow weak passwords by default.
To mitigate the product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free of trivial brute-force attacks on local passphrases, older versions of Windows need to be configured using the Security Settings portion of Group Policy to never store LM hashes, and of course, to not enable Autologon which stores werver passphrases in the registry.
Further, using local user account passphrases over 14 characters long prevents Windows from storing an LM hash in srrver SAM — and has the added product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free of making brute-force attacks against the NTLM hash harder.
When encrypting files with EFS — when converting plaintext files to encrypted files — the plaintext files product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free not wiped, but simply deleted i. This means that, unless they for example happen to be stored on an SSD with TRIM support, they can be easily recovered unless they are overwritten.
To fully mitigate known, non-challenging technical attacks against EFS, encryption should be configured at the folder level so that all temporary files like Word document backups which are created in these directories are also encrypted. When encrypting individual files, they should be copied to an encrypted folder or encrypted «in place», followed by securely wiping the disk volume. Anyone who can gain Administrators access can overwrite, override or change the Data Recovery Agent configuration.
This is a very serious issue, since an attacker can for example hack the Administrator account using third-party toolsset whatever DRA certificate they want as the Data Recovery Agent and wait. This is sometimes referred to as a two-stage attack, which is a significantly different scenario than the risk due to a lost or stolen PC, but which highlights the risk due to malicious insiders.
When the user encrypts files after the first stage of such an attack, the FEKs are automatically encrypted with the designated DRA’s public key. The attacker only needs to access the computer once more as Administrator to gain full access to all those subsequently EFS-encrypted files.
Even using Syskey mode 2 or 3 does not protect against this attack, because the attacker could back up the encrypted files offline, restore them derver and use the DRA’s private key to decrypt the files. If such a malicious insider can gain physical access to the computer, all security features are to be considered irrelevant, because kdy could also install rootkitssoftware or even hardware keyloggers etc.
Files encrypted with EFS can only be decrypted by using the RSA private key s matching the previously used public key s. The stored copy of the user’s private key is ultimately protected by the user’s logon password. Accessing encrypted files from outside Windows with other operating systems Linuxfor example is not possible — not least of which because there is currently no third party EFS component driver.
Further, using special tools посмотреть больше reset the user’s login password will render it impossible to decrypt the user’s private key and thus useless for gaining access to the user’s encrypted files. The significance of this is occasionally lost on users, resulting in data loss if a user forgets his or her password, or fails источник статьи back up the encryption key. This led to coining of the term «delayed recycle bin», to describe the seeming inevitability of data loss if an inexperienced user encrypts his or her files.
Windows EFS supports a range of symmetric encryption algorithms, depending on the version of Windows in use when the files are encrypted:. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Microsoft Windows was announced by Bill Gates on November 10, The first versions of Windows 1. Windows 95though still being based on MS-DOS, was its own operating system, enterprie a bit DOS-based kernel [ citation needed ] and a bit user space. Windows ky introduced many features that have been part of the product ever since, including the Start menuthe taskbarand Windows Explorer renamed File Explorer in Windows 8.
It aimed to rr2 Internet Explorer and the web into the user interface and also brought many new features into Windows, such as the ability to display JPEG images as the desktop wallpaper and single window product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free in Windows Explorer.
Enterprixe product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free included USB support out of the product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free, and also plug and playwhich allows devices keg work when plugged in without requiring a system reboot or manual configuration.
InMicrosoft released Windows NT r22. Unlike the Windows 9x series of operating systems, it is a fully bit operating system. InWindows NT 4. Ссылка на продолжение NT was windkws designed to be used on high-end systems and servers, but with the release of Windowsmany consumer-oriented features from Windows 95 and Windows 98 were included, such as the Windows Desktop UpdateInternet Explorer 5USB support and Windows Media Player.
These consumer-oriented features were further extended in Windows XP eeditionwhich included a new visual style called Lunaa more user-friendly interface, updated versions of Windows Proudct Player and Internet Explorer 6 by default, and extended features from Windows Me, such as the Proruct and Support Center and System Restore. Windows Vistawhich was released inpoduct on securing the Нажмите для деталей operating system against computer viruses and other malicious software by introducing features such as User Account Editkon.
New features include Windows Aeroupdated versions of the standard games e. Despite this, Windows Vista was critically panned for its poor performance on older hardware and its at-the-time high system requirements. Windows 7 followed in nearly three years after its launch, and despite it technically having higher system requirements, [3] [4] reviewers noted that it ran better than Windows Vista. Windows 8which was released inintroduced fref controversial changes, such as the replacement of the Start menu with the Start Windowd, the removal of the Aero interface in favor of a flat, colored interface as well as wwindows introduction of «Metro» apps later renamed to Universal Windows Platform appsand the Charms Bar user interface element, all of which received considerable criticism from reviewers.
The following version of Windows, Windows 10which was released inreintroduced the Start menu and added the ability to run Universal Product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free Platform apps in a window instead of always in full screen. Windows 10 was generally well-received, editkon many reviewers stating that Windows 10 is what Windows 8 should have been. The latest version of Windows, Windows 11was released on October 5, Windows 11 incorporates a redesigned user interface, including a new Start menu, a visual style featuring rounded corners, and a product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free layout for the Microsoft Store, [13] and also included Microsoft Edge by default.
The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1. The project was briefly codenamed «Interface Manager» before enherprise windowing keyy was implemented—contrary to popular belief that it was the original name for Windows product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free Rowland Hansonthe head of marketing at Microsoft, convinced the company http://replace.me/26906.txt the name Windows would be more appealing to customers.
Windows 1. The first version of Microsoft Windows included a simple graphics painting program called Windows Paint ; Windows Подробнее на этой страницеa simple word processor ; an appointment calendar; a card-filer; a notepad ; a clock; a control panel ; a computer terminal ; Clipboard ; and RAM ddition.
Microsoft had worked with Apple Computer to develop applications for Apple’s new Macintosh computer, which featured a graphical user interface. As part of the related business negotiations, Microsoft had licensed certain aspects of the Macintosh user interface from Apple; in later litigation, a district court summarized these aspects выходит barber shop game download for pc зайти «screen displays».
In the development of Windows 1. For example, windows were only displayed «tiled» editioj the screen; that is, they could not overlap or overlie one another. On December 31,Microsoft declared Windows 1. Microsoft Windows version 2. Much of the popularity for Windows 2. Microsoft Windows received a major boost around this time when Aldus PageMaker appeared in a Windows version, having previously run only on Macintosh.
Some computer historians [ who? Like prior versions of Windows, version dnterprise. In prdouct a configuration, it could run under product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free multitasker like DESQviewwhich used the protected mode.
It was also the first version to support the High Memory Area entreprise running on an Intel compatible processor. Version 2. In Apple Computer, Inc. Microsoft Corp. Judge William Schwarzer dropped all but 10 of Apple’s claims of windws infringement, and ruled that most of the remaining 10 enterprsie over uncopyrightable ideas.
On December 31,Product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free declared Windows 2. Windows 3. A product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free months after product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free, Windows 3. A «multimedia» version, Windows 3. This version was the precursor to the multimedia features available in Ссылка 3.
The features listed above and growing market support взято отсюда application software developers made Windows 3. Support was discontinued on December 31, Its API was incompatible with Windows. Version 1.
They cooperated with each other in developing their PC operating systems, and esrver access to each other’s code. Windows 10 download gratis nederlands free download an interim 1. Microsoft would later imitate much of it in Windows Still, much of the system had bit code internally which required, among other things, device drivers to be bit code as well.
It also removed Real Mode, and only ran on an or better processor. Later Microsoft also released Windows 3. In andMicrosoft released Windows for Workgroups WfWwhich was available both as an add-on for existing Windows 3.
Windows for Workgroups included improved network drivers and protocol stacks, and support for peer-to-peer networking. There were two versions of Windows for Workgroups, WfW 3. Unlike prior versions, Windows for Workgroups 3. All these versions continued version 3. Even though the 3. The Windows API became the de facto standard for consumer software.
On December 31,Microsoft declared Windows 3. Meanwhile, Microsoft continued to develop Windows NT. This successor was codenamed Cairo. In hindsight, Cairo was a much more difficult project than Microsoft had anticipated and, as a result, NT and Chicago would not be unified until Windows XP —albeit Windowsoriented to business, had already unified most of the system’s bolts and gears, it was XP that was sold to home consumers like Windows 95 and came to be viewed as the final unified OS.
Driver support was lacking due to the increased programming difficulty in dealing with NT’s superior hardware abstraction model. This problem plagued the NT line all the way through Windows Programmers complained that it was too hard to write drivers for NT, and hardware developers prlduct not going to go through the trouble of developing drivers for a small segment of the market.
Additionally, although allowing enterpriwe good performance and fuller exploitation of system посмотреть еще, it was also resource-intensive on limited hardware, and thus was only suitable for larger, more expensive machines. However, these same features made Windows NT perfect for the LAN server market which in was srver a rapid boom, as office networking was becoming common.
Windows NT version 3. The Win32 API had three levels of implementation: the complete one for Windows NT, a subset for Chicago originally called Win32c перейти features primarily of interest to enterprise customers at the time such as security and Unicode support, and a more limited subset called Win32s which could be used on Windows 3.
Thus Microsoft sought to ensure some degree of compatibility between the Chicago product key windows server 2003 r2 enterprise edition free and Windows NT, even though kej two systems had radically different internal architectures. Windows NT was the first Windows operating system based on a hybrid kernel.
The hybrid kernel was designed as a modified microkernelinfluenced by the Mach microkernel developed by Richard Editiob at Carnegie Mellon University, but without meeting all of the criteria of a pure microkernel. As released, Windows NT 3. The 3. Support for Windows NT 3. After Windows 3. The Win32 API first introduced with Windows NT produuct adopted as the standard bit programming interface, with Win16 compatibility being preserved through a technique known as » thunking «.
A new object-oriented GUI was not originally planned as enterprrise of the release, although elements of the Cairo user interface were borrowed and added as other aspects of the release notably Plug and Play перейти на страницу. Microsoft did not change all of the Windows code to bit; parts of it remained bit albeit not directly using real mode for reasons of compatibility, performance, and development time.
Additionally it was necessary entetprise carry over design decisions from earlier versions of Windows for reasons of backwards compatibility, even if these design decisions no longer windowx a more modern computing environment.
These factors eventually began to impact the operating system’s efficiency приведенная ссылка stability. Microsoft marketing adopted Windows 95 as the product name for Chicago when it was released on August 24, Microsoft had a double gain from its release: first, it made it impossible for consumers to run Windows 95 on a cheaper, non-Microsoft DOS, secondly, although traces читать далее DOS were never completely removed from the system and MS DOS 7 would be loaded briefly as a part enterpries the booting process, Windows 95 applications ran solely in enhanced mode, with a flat bit address space and virtual memory.
These features make it possible for Win32 applications to address up to 2 gigabytes of virtual RAM with another 2 GB reserved for the operating systemand in theory prevented them from inadvertently corrupting the memory space of other Win32 applications. Three years after its introduction, Windows 95 was succeeded больше на странице Windows Unlike with Windows 3.
Microsoft case, blaming unfair marketing tactics on Microsoft’s part. Some companies sold new hard drives with OSR2 preinstalled officially justifying this as needed due to the hard drive’s capacity. The first Microsoft Plus! Microsoft ended extended support for Windows 95 on December 31, Microsoft released the successor to NT 3.
It was Microsoft’s primary business-oriented operating system until the introduction of Windows Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows NT 4. Both editions were succeeded by Windows Professional and the Windows Server Family, respectively.
This edition was succeeded by Windows XP Embedded.

Microsoft characterized the retail packaging for Windows Vista as «designed to be user-friendly, a small, hard, plastic container designed to protect the software inside for life-long use»; [7] it opens sideways to reveal the Windows Vista DVD suspended in a clear plastic case. With the exception of Windows Vista Starter, all editions support both IA bit and x64 bit processor architectures. Users could purchase and download Windows Vista directly from Microsoft through the Windows Marketplace before the service’s discontinuation.
Microsoft sold these licenses online through its website. Most bit programs can run natively, though applications that rely on device drivers will not run unless those device drivers have been written for x64 platforms. All bit versions of Microsoft operating systems impose a 16 TB limit on address space.
Processes created on the bit editions of Windows Vista can have 8 TB in virtual memory for user processes and 8 TB for kernel processes to create a virtual memory of 16 TB. The Commission concluded that Microsoft «broke European Union competition law by leveraging its near monopoly in the market for PC operating systems onto the markets for work group server operating systems and for media players. Unlike that decision, however, Microsoft was also forced to withdraw the non-compliant versions of Windows from the South Korean market.
As a continuance of these requirements, Microsoft released «N» and «KN» variants of some editions of Windows Vista that exclude Windows Media Player, as well as «K» and «KN» editions that include links to third-party media player and instant messaging software. Two additional editions of Windows Vista have been released for use by developers of embedded devices.
These are binary identical editions to those available in retail, but licensed exclusively for use in embedded devices. Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows Vista does not support compliance checking during installation; compliance checking previously allowed users to insert a disc as evidence that the operating system was being upgraded over a previous version, which would allow users to enter an upgrade license to perform a clean install.
However, upgrading from a bit edition to a bit edition or downgrading from bit edition to a bit edition requires a clean install.
