A macro lens used in macro or «close-up» photography not to be confused with the compositional term close up is any lens that produces an image on the focal plane i. I sent a third email last week and still haven’t received a response. So I got nearly 3 months of good use out of it. And then three of increasingly frustrating use. I will say that running a shotgun mic on the top will pick up motor noise, so you’ll need to buy an accessory to raise it up higher or a flexible arm to put it on the bottom in a way that the cable can still reach without pulling on the camera.
Also, tighten the battery compartment well or the gimbal will randomly turn off if it gets loose. That happened the very first time I was shooting an event and it lost me some amazing footage while I figured it out. I had thought it was tight enough, but you really need to screw it on hard. It has not happened again, so it can be easily avoided. It’s a little hard to calibrate because the metal tends to get a bit stuck, but it’s not such an issue that I’ve bothered to squirt some silicone on it.
I use my tripod to balance it and then attach the external mic to the bottom afterwards. The attachable stand might be easier to take around, but my tripod head has a level built in, so I figure it is better for balancing on uneven ground. Other things to note If you want to put it back in the case you will need to adjust it to fit, which means it won’t be balanced anymore.
Once it is out of the case and balanced then you can keep it that way pretty easily. I was afraid that taking it off the plate to swap out batteries would unbalance it, but it works perfectly as long as you put the camera back on in roughly the same position. The only time it became unbalanced was because two or three dials were not tightened down. I noticed it shift when I put it down, but I don’t know if they loosened over time or if I just somehow forgot while I was in a hurry.
Anyway, a good mechanical steadycam can be nearly the same cost, they are vulnerable to wind, and they can cause serious shoulder pain very quickly. This mechanical gimbal has given me silky smooth footage even while running and no physical pain after holding it for about 7 hours straight. I suppose it’s not as good at natural movements.
The fastest panning speed is relatively slow and it has a tendency to overpan the scene it keeps moving a little when you want it to stop. Nothing to worry about. Anticipate starting and stopping movement sooner to keep everything in the shot while using the joystick before or after critical shots so you can edit out the robotic motion later.
Newer models of gimbals let you tweak the settings to perfection and offer fast natural panning without any effort, so it’s a matter of convenience really. I’m happy with it so far. The actual directions need a bit of work but that’s more of a translation issue. Youtube is very helpful once you find someone that is clear and assumes you DON’T already know how to use it.
I also purchased the dual hand grip as well as the wireless Bluetooth remote that fits on the hand grip to make it easier to carry and help eliminate fatigue with long usage. I’ve also used my Nikon D with 50mm and Canon t5 with mm and they work great as well! Not quite as fluid due to weight and you have to learn the limitations but they work none the less!
